CTC: Cut Tear and Curl.
Orthodox teas are more costly than CTC because Orthodox tea manufacture requires more workers that are skilled and many additional steps to accomplish the task. CTC was initially devised as a way to process damaged or low quality leaf that was otherwise unusable. However, today this machinery is the mainstay of much tea production to process tea for teabags where the concern was for immediate release of color into the cup rather than finesse of flavor and distinctive expressions of terroir”
