How it all began

The Dilmah School of Tea was established on 6th May 2009, as a tribute to Dilmah Founder Merrill J. Fernando who on that day celebrated his 79th birthday and his 60th year in tea.

In 2009, the world’s leading centre for culinary and hospitality excellence -Institute Paul Bocuse and Dilmah announced a partnership in establishing the first International Tea School. The partnership is designed to inspire passion in tea through knowledge of the artisanal aspects of tea.

Sessions of the School of Tea commenced in October 2009 with modules covering the theory and practice of tea, in relation to its manufacture, brewing, presentation and appreciation of tea.

Professional development is at the very heart of it, encouraging those engaged in the culinary trade to enhance their knowledge on this versatile herb and to encourage them to utilize it in their vocation.

Our Vision

Despite its wide consumption, little is known or understood about this magical herb, even within the hospitality industry. Consequently, other than being on their checklists, scant regard is usually paid to tea in terms of quality, variety and presentation.

The intent of the Dilmah School of Tea is to break down the myths and the staid image of tea. And by doing so, to present the hospitality and retail industries with an opportunity to add value to their services, which will enhance their own reputations and delight their customers.
